Cheap Eat of the Week: The County General’s apple cider

The holidays, in beverage form (Image: Gizelle Lau)

The holidays aren’t quite over yet, which means there’s still time to indulge in comforting treats like latkes or gingerbread. For me, it’s about the tastes and smells of the season: peppermint mochas, shortbread cookies and especially homemade apple cider mulling on the stove, with aromas of maple syrup, cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, berries, orange and lemon wafting through the air.

If you’re looking a delicious winter quaff, head to The County General for its apple cider ($3.5) and be sure to spike it for $5 (or more, depending on what it’s spiked with). This concoction will cure the winter woes and take the edge off the wind chill factor. It’s essentially the holiday experience crammed inside of a cup.

The cider is from Bennett’s Apples & Cider in Ancaster, Ontario (near Hamilton). For over 90 years, this cider has been made from quality Ontario apples that are pressed at the farm’s very own cider mill, then flash pasteurized to create a natural, sweet and refreshing cider. You can even watch the process on YouTube.

Served in a thick glass beer mug with a cinnamon stick, turn it into a boozy cider with one of The County General’s choice rums, including the dark Goslings Black Seal ($6) from Bermuda, the Appleton Estate VX ($5) from Jamaica or the five-year-old El Dorado ($5) from Guyana. Warms the hands and goes down easy (maybe too easy).

The County General, 936 Queen St. W., 416-531-4447.

My cheap eat of the week pick would be the Fry Basket at Steeles & Yonge. This place offices pick of sausage, bacon or ham WITH three eggs AND a generous helping of homefries AND toast AND coffee or tea for $6.49. Delicious and ridiculously cheap prices. I'm also excited about the spare parking behind the restaurant by the back door. I hate going out to eat and looking forever for parking!
