Coming Soon: Bellwoods Brewery, a new microbrewery, retail store and café in Toronto’s west end
By Sabrina Nanji
It’s shaping up to be a good year for Toronto’s beer scene. A slew of new breweries like Spearhead Brewing Company and Kensington Brewing Company have already taken root, and now Bellwoods Brewery is set to join the fray later this year.
The upcoming microbrewery, retail store and café will be located at the former site of Ossington’s Meta Gallery. There, owners Mike Clark and Luke Pestl (formerly of Amsterdam Brewery) will combine their passion for beer, food and of course, harvesting delicious hops, which they’ll do right here in Toronto.
Pilot brewing began this summer, and Clark tells us they’ll (hopefully) be ready to begin some limited wholesaling and retailing of their “craft ales and fermented elixirs” within a few months. The microbrewery is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2011; a café and tasting room should be completed within six to eight months.
They've also recruited chef Guy Rawlings (Brockton General, Cowbell) who will be consulting on the menu design as a friend of the brewery. Clark says he hopes to collaborate with a number of local chefs and food suppliers to keep the menu as seasonally up-to-date as possible.
And, he's adamantly against having deep fryers in the intimate, “indoor picnic” style café (it’ll only seat around 30).
If you're itching to get a taste of the homegrown brews, the Brewery is holding auditions for 100 official volunteer tasters (but really, who wants to drink beer for free anyway?). The catch? Just submit a note (or story, poem, haiku, song or video, as the website suggests) as to why you're the perfect beer panel member. And be of legal drinking age, of course.
Belwoods Brewery, 124 Ossington Ave.
