Cheap Eat of the Week: an icy-sweet dessert from Gelato Simply Italian

Cool creations (Image: Gizelle Lau)

Sure, Hollywood Gelato may have started Toronto’s love affair with gelato over 10 years ago, but these days, my go-to spots in the Yonge and Eglinton or midtown areas are Il Gelatiere and Gelato Simply Italian, two shops offering what’s easily some of the best gelato in the city.

Gelato Simply Italian’s first location at 2076 Yonge Street opened in the summer of 2010, and just last year, a second location opened in Yorkville, just steps from Hemingway’s. No matter which location, Gelato Simply Italian is all about artisanally-crafted gelato made with premium ingredients, but it’s the daily churning of flavours that makes the gelato truly exceptional — the perfect treat for a summer evening after (or before) dinner.

With nearly 50 flavours to choose from (and over twice as many flavours that are rotated in and out), this place is a dream for lovers of gelato or ice cream. Flavours range from traditional heavy hitters like pistachio and hazelnut to rice (for those who dare). Pictured above is a flavour that’s quickly becoming my favourite: lime and cilantro (though you have to be one of those people who really like cilantro) along with passion fruit and blood orange gelato.

Pricing starts at $4.50 for a small (two flavours), $5.75 for a medium (three flavours) or $7 for a large (four flavours).
