Toronto’s Best Sandwiches: the roast beef sandwich at Rowe Farms

Situated across from the iconic Lee’s Palace, the Annex location of Rowe Farms is a breath of fresh air from the street-side hustle and bustle. Local products from Kozlik’s, Toorshi Foods and Fred’s Bread line the shelves, though the main attraction is the Ontario-raised meat. Free of antibiotics, growth hormones and animal by-products, the meat comes loaded with flavour.

After introducing a compact sandwich menu last fall, the Bloor Street location is still the only Rowe in the city whipping up takeout. Our pick is the roast beef sandwich ($6), sliced on-location and served au jus. Unlike the majority of deli meats, this version comes free of preservatives, with not a single nitrate — or nitrite — to be found.

Joined by a pile of caramelized onions, the beef is stacked high onto slices of fresh Marc Thuet sourdough bread. The final touch is a smear of either Quebecois Dijon or a house-made chipotle aioli, resulting in a sandwich so hearty that it may have to be eaten in two rounds.
