Toronto’s Best Sandwiches: The County General’s fried chicken thigh sandwich

Queen West’s much-ballyhooed The County General serves up comfort fare fit for just about everyone — if you can snag a seat. Attracting an endless stream of noshers, the long ’n’ lean eatery features a row of blonde wood tables decked out in homey blue-and-white gingham napkins. The space makes for a rather convivial dining experience and, by the end of it, you may have just buddied up with the kid to the left.

Served up on a rustic slab of wood, the fried chicken thigh sandwich ($14) is the pick of the litter. Starring meat from Cumbrae’s, the thigh is soaked in buttermilk before being cooked sous vide. Dipped in breadcrumbs, the lot is then flash fried and tossed with their secret spice combo.

Barely squeezing into a Marc Thuet milk bun, the chicken is stacked atop a kefir lime and avocado chutney and finished with some cilantro and house-pickled red onion.

Best of all? It pairs beautifully with bourbon. And The General’s got plenty.
