Friday Restaurant Recap: The Beer Bar, Thomas Lavers Cannery & Delicatessen, Ramen Raijin, Crown Cooks

Friday Restaurant Recap rounds up the week’s Toronto restaurant news. In this edition: a new beer bar on Eglinton, some competition for Snakes & Lattes, a chef de cuisine for Crown Cooks and more.

Opening Soon

  • The Beer Bar is coming soon to Eglinton East. We don’t know much, but we presume there will be beer. [The Beer Bar]
  • Kensington Market is a hub of eclectic food, and a new addition is set to arrive come December. Thomas Lavers Cannery & Delicatessen brings canned, cured, pickled, brined and handmade food to the table. [NOW Magazine]
  • Vancouver izakaya Zakkushi is coming soon to Carlton Street, bringing its Japanese-style pub food to Toronto for the first time. [The Grid]
  • The team behind The Fifth Grill and The Fifth Social Club are opening a pub and café in the former Fluid space. It’s expected to be open by spring of 2013. [BlogTO]

Newly opened

  • Rashers opened its doors last week, supplying Leslieville with bacon sandwiches — and lots of them.
  • Just when you thought the ramen craze couldn’t get any crazier, Ramen Raijin opens on Gerrard Street.
  • When one door closes, another opens. At least that’s what happened in Bloordale with the closing of The Bloordale Pantry and the recent opening of The Whippoorwill Restaurant and Tavern in its place.
  • Go Lounge is bringing some healthy competition to Toronto’s board game café scene. [BlogTO]

Change-ups

  • Grant van Gameren’s much-anticipated Crown Cooks is slated to open in February (fingers crossed), and this week, van Gameren announced that Brandon Olsen (formerly of The Black Hoof) will be his chef de cuisine.
  • Chef Bruce Woods has resigned from Modus and is looking for a place to call his own. [Toronto Life]
