Spotted: Uptown and downtown, Toronto diners are digging Dutch food

Suddenly Toronto is taking note of Dutch cuisine. At Real Mo-Mo’s, located at 51 Colborne St., owner Mo Guffens has put together a menu that looks to her extensive experiences abroad. Born and raised in the Netherlands, Guffens is looking to introduce Torontonians to food like bitterballen (minced beef-stuffed balls), kip sate (chicken skewers with peanut sauce) and uitsmijter, a traditional Dutch breakfast dish. Oh, and don’t worry — they’ve got toast with hagelslag too.

Meanwhile over at Noorden, Yonge and Eglinton’s new eatery and bar from Michael van den Winkel and Jennifer Gittins, chef Peter Tompkins is turning out plenty of modern Dutch-style eats. Bites include the toothsome war fries, which see russet potatoes topped with garlic aïoli, peanut sauce and pickled chilies. And for those who want the whole hog, they serve the city’s only rijsttafel feast, available for a table of six.  rijsttafel feast, available for a table of six.
