Over the second half of Fashion Art Toronto, things got a little bit racier. With the themes of the two days broken down into “Bodyscapes” and “Futurescapes,” very little was left to the imagination. Montreal’s Zent and Pedram Karimi stood out with their distinctive visions, while labels like House of Etiquette and Artifice Clothing brought the likes of PVC and latex down the runway, much to the delight of the crowd.

Fashion Art Toronto — recently renamed from Alternative Fashion Week — is Fashion Week’s younger and more expressive cousin. Held in a loft space on Sterling Road (next to the Nestlé chocolate factory, which emits mouthwatering aromas), the festival gives up-and-coming designers a chance to expose their creations to an open-minded and alternative crowd.

When it comes to fashion, sharing is overrated. Temporary clothing swaps with friends should always be considered with the utmost caution: even if you are the best of friends, you run the risk of never seeing your pieces again, or having them returned with irreparable damage. Trust us, it happens all the time. Because of this, we’ve decided to be up front about our “hands off!” approach to our wardrobe.

Chloé and Parris Gordon, the sisters behind the label, will be holding the sale that the brand’s new studio digs just off Queen West — and they’ll be doing plenty of price slashing, marking down past collections by as much as 80 per cent.

Oh, to be the lady in red. Every woman wants to be the one who turns all the heads, but even attempting to try on a head-to-toe red evening gown can be intimidating. The colour demands confidence. With wedding season on the horizon, we say it’s time to take baby steps towards introducing this power colour into your wardrobe.

Fashion-forward women who have travelled the globe and have the tastes to match exist in Toronto. The problem? Once comfortably back home, they lust and long for the beauty and design of that exquisite jewellery, those drool-worthy shoes and supple leather bags that are found only in the world’s most chic cities. But fabulous brands and beautiful things can be found in Toronto, too. Case in point: retail veteran Jaya Kahlon has just opened the Sauvage pop-up store.

Remember when Queen West was known for being the best shopping strip in the city? From local designers to cool indie shops, the street’s sprawl grew fast. But lately we’ve noticed more papered-up windows and closing sales than ever, leading us to recently report on what everyone’s been thinking: “What’s up with Queen West?”

The girls behind local unisex apparel brand Muttonhead Collective are quickly garnering a (well-deserved) name around Toronto as leaders in the patriotic pop-up shop. Having consistently acted as the gracious hosts behind some of the best roving boutiques to hit the city of late, the collective’s newest feat, the Mutts & Co. Traveling Market on College Street, could be its best yet.

Yesterday evening much of the city’s fashion folk headed to Ryerson University to take in Mass Exodus 2012: Lucid. Held at the Ryerson Theatre, the student-run event presented a runway collection of young designers — 25 of them, in all — who are graduating from the university's Fashion Design program. The show is a great place to check out up-and-coming designers.

Have you ever watched a droplet of oil or ink splash into water and been fascinated by how it explodes into its new space? Local designer, Jessica Mary Clayton, took this visual pleasure one step further, capturing the experience as it happened, and then printed the results onto her new spring collection.

In the second half of our guide to Parkdale’s most interesting shops, we give you the best places to find roller derby equipment, high-end fly swatters and a gizmo to keep your mustache out of your tea. Really, is there anything that can’t be found on a jaunt through Parkdale?

Once home to Toronto’s waterfront community, Parkdale changed gears after the Gardiner Expressway was built, drawing a far more working-class crowd. While in recent years the strip of Queen Street between Dufferin and Roncey has often been characterised as a no-man’s land, this west-end hood is now on the up. You can get your hands on everything from contemporary jewellery to 19th century antiques.

Emporium by I Miss You, the latest vintage offering on Ossington, has opened up in the space formerly occupied by Philip Sparks’ pop-up shop. The tiny shop is the doing of Julie Yoo, owner of next-door’s I Miss You Vintage. Prior to opening her boutique — which serves up a combo of vintage and designer consignment pieces — Yoo was in the antiques business for 15 years. With Emporium, she is returning to her roots.

While my style has always been a bit ghetto-fab and sporty, this look makes me laugh because I can’t help but be reminded of Lana Del Rey (minus those puffy lips and that oh-so-wide-eyed look). Even though I might disagree with her claims of “natural beauty,” there’s no doubt the girl and I share a mutual love for Veronica Lake, bling and anything with a varsity vibe. Not to mention a good pair of shades!
