Something men ought to know about: this indigo-dyed henley by Toronto brand Metsa Design

This just in: You need a henley, and you need one, like, yesterday. There are a few reasons for this. For one, they are bastions of versatility—a quality henley can go from serving as a basic layering piece, to complementing your denims, to being that uber casual top you had no business pairing so effortlessly with your Italian sport coat and trousers.

Not bad for a garment whose humble beginnings were as an undershirt in ‘1800s Britain. And if you’re not convinced of their stylishness, just ask Steve friggin’ McQueen, or better yet, the man behind Toronto brand Metsa Design, who made the one you see above.

That man is Markus Uran, a local designer who makes simple, yet undeniably nuanced basics for men, such as crisp oxford shirts with pockets placed rebelliously lower than usual. With his interpretation of the beloved utility top, Uran takes things one step further: he’s dyed the shirt with natural indigo straight from India, and he’s done so multiple times with each one in order to get that bold, saturated hue of blue. What’s even better is that the process is such that each piece looks slightly different than the next. As if you’re not loving the sounds of that.
