Shop Talk: T.O. designer Jennifer Torosian on marrying tech and design

While working in the retail end of the fashion business, Jennifer Torosian crossed paths with her now-husband and business partner, Raed Ali. The two had endless conversations about their vision for the future of fashion and decided to bring a Canada-made line to life.

How would you describe the Jennifer Torosian esthetic?
Jennifer Torosian is a women’s ready-to-wear brand known for its sport-luxe esthetic, focused on technical fabrics and streamlined silhouettes. Lines are soft but graphic in nature, combined with energetic prints and textures.

You’re known for using high-tech fabrics. What are some examples of that?
Yes, we use some very cool fabrics — a lot of them have a slick feeling to the touch. We have used mesh and bonded jersey, neoprene, silks with nylon finishes and techno fabrics for daywear. And we are always looking for new fabric options to work with each season.

What are your wardrobe essentials?
Unique blazers, techno jackets for travel and layering, crop pants and the classic dress shirt with a twist.

How did you react to Toronto Fashion Week being cancelled?
It was sad to hear that TFW is currently cancelled. However, I think that this is a great opportunity for new ideas to come to life.

If TFW comes back, what improvements do you hope to see?
I think we would like the schedule to be reviewed; more government support would be helpful; and a community that comes together to support each other both in creativity and in commerce.

Why did you choose to have your line made in Canada?
It allows us to oversee the process and keep our high standards of quality. We know how and where our product is made, and we are proud to be a Canadian-based brand. jennifertorosian.com
