Heading back to work post-holidays is always a drag (never mind having to get out of bed when the city has issued an extreme cold weather alert). So we say distract yourself from real work by sprucing up your desk with some new treats to make the back-to-work transition more fun. Here’s our quick-fix shopping guide to the best in desk décor.

Reflecting back on the year of 2011, we’ve come to realize how heavily we’ve relied on A2Zane as our go-to accessory shop, and we aren’t the only ones. The shop has proved to be so popular that since its launch in 2010, it has grown from an online shop to a pop-up to a full-fledged boutique in the heart of Queen West’s best shopping strip.

All month, we’ve been bombarded with frantic “but, what should I get them!?” questions in the lead-up to Christmas. From girlfriends in Germany, boyfriends in Britain to loved ones right here in Toronto, our answer is always the same: go heritage, and go Canadian.

From pop-up shops to super discounts to sample sales, there is a heck of a lot happening in the city over the next few days. You know what that means? Come Monday, your wardrobe is going to look extra fabulous — or perhaps you will have found most of your Christmas gifts. Either way, there will be some major credit card damage, but it will be worth it. Here’s a guide to the best in shopping this weekend.

Every fashion-loving lady lusts for one of Alexander Wang’s Diego bags (unless she owns one already). Why do we love them so much? Well, first off, the bucket shape makes them neither dainty nor annoyingly oversized, and the studs and heavy metal make them all-around badass. While the Diego may be an icon in the handbag world, sometimes we like to look for lesser-known alternatives, especially when it means we can support our homegrown talent.

For our neighbourhood feature this month we headed east to Riverside. Oft lumped together with Leslieville, this stretch of Queen Street East has some flair of its own, featuring a smattering of shops that speak mostly to our palates and our design sensibilities. Below, some of our favourite shops in the area.

A walk along the Ossington and Queen West strips means two things for vintage shoppers: more room in the wallet and less room in the closet. Of course, it’s hard to avoid purchases when it comes to the many unique pieces that are found in the vintage shops around Toronto. With over 50 stores alone in the city centre, Torontonians have long known that the vintage scene here is one of the best in the world.

If there was only one thing we could get this holiday season, these ‘80s Chanel earrings from Carole Tanenbaum’s vintage collection would be it. First off, they are Chanel, so how could anyone not love them? Second, they are gold, have crystals and also a medallion drop. Third, they are simply chi-chi-chic to the highest degree. Who cares about new clothes when you could be wearing these?

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to be an ex-model who rolls with the royals? And by roll we actually mean be related to them? How about to also reside full-time in the Bahamas, plus have a successful jewellery line? Well, we wonder these things regularly, and if you do too, we suggest heading over to Holt Renfrew on Bloor this afternoon to personally ask the lady who would know: India Hicks.

We can’t think of anything better than a brand new, slouchy tee that feels as soft on the skin as a well-worn favourite, wouldn’t you agree? This is why we love L.A. label KAIN so much. The sisters behind the line, Amanda and Melanie Kain, have dedicated themselves to creating modern, stylish and super-soft basics of the utmost quality for women around the world since 2008.

Joe Jonas and thousands of hysterical teens launched the opening of Calvin Klein’s new freestanding store in Toronto last week, located at the Fairview Mall. The Jonas brother in the middle rocked a James Dean-esque look — black leather moto jacket, white V-neck T-shirt and black Calvin Klein jeans – to serenade his fans (well, the lucky first 150 to be let through the shop’s glass doors) with songs from his new solo album, Fastlife.

Something old can now be new this Sunday at Tabula Rasa. Head over to the Queen and Broadview boutique with your old, broken and unworn jewellery for a cozy afternoon of jewellery repair, vintage re-working and custom necklace creations. Local jeweler Brittany Hopkins, of Anice Jewellery, will be presiding.

It’s the first of December, and you know what that means: your social schedule is going to be jam-packed with holiday parties for the next two months. If you haven’t already begun adding a bit of razzle-dazzle and jewel tones to your wardrobe, we suggest you begin now. Of course we could tell you to go buy another little black dress, or even a red-satin showstopper, jazzed up with some “holiday” accessories — but then you would end up looking like everyone else, and we wouldn’t want that.
