The First Annual Jeanne Awards, highlighting the best of Toronto fashion

Published:

Introducing the first ever Jeanne Awards. Our resident fashion expert, Jeanne Beker, hands out industry accolades to long-time favourites who continue to excel, up-and-comers arriving on the scene and the biggest names in the fashion game in 2014. And the Jeanne goes to...

T.O.’S UP-AND-COMING DESIGNER

CAITLIN POWER

Beker says Caitlin Power will be a force to be reckoned with down the road. “I find that she designs a lot of very strong, clean looks for a modern woman who almost sees herself as a bit of an urban warrior.”

OUTSTANDING SHOE STORE

DAVIDS

“I have such respect for that family, I think they really know what they’re doing in terms of their sensibility and the designers they carry. And the service is always really outstanding,” says Beker.

MOST STYLISH SPA

MIRAJ HAMMAM SPA

“I love, love them because it’s that Middle Eastern experience. I like to send people there. It’s my personal favourite,” says Beker.

TOP INTERNATIONAL BRAND

DSQUARED2

“It’s got to be DSquared2,” says Beker of Dean and Dan Caten’s line. They are currently based in Milan, but the design duo’s upbringing traces back to North Toronto.

FINEST VINTAGE BOUTIQUE

THE CAT’S MEOW COUTURE

It’s tough for Beker to choose just one, but she states that the Cat’s Meow is pretty fabulous. “They’ve got some great stuff.”

POPULAR PERSONAL STYLIST

GEORGE ANTONOPOULOS

Without any hesitation, Beker picks George Antonopoulos as Toronto’s best personal stylist. Celebrities that Antonopoulos has worked with include Emily Blunt, Iman, Olivia Wilde and Milla Jovovich.

T.O.’S BRAND OF THE YEAR

HARRY ROSEN

Celebrating its 60th anniversary, Harry Rosen is Beker’s pick for brand of the year. “He really brought new meaning to menswear in this town,” she says.

TALENTED MAKEUP ARTIST

KRIS WARES

“Best makeup artist has to be Kris Wares from Chanel,” says Beker. Wares holds one of 12 highly coveted positions on the first Ultimate Chanel Makeup Team.

FINEST FORMAL WEAR BOUTIQUE

FREDA’S

Jeanne loves the high end ladies wear available at Freda's at King and Bathurst. The boutique carries the latest European fashions at affordable prices.

BRAND TO WATCH

ERIN KLEINBERG

One of the original minds behind Toronto’s hottest fashion blog, the Coveteur, Erin Kleinberg has returned to her roots in design. “She just started, and I love what she’s doing,” says Beker.

ACE ACCESSORIES DESIGNER

JALEH FARHADPOUR

“She is a jewellery designer who is opening a new boutique on Oct. 8 at the Four Seasons, called Archives,” says Beker. The shop will carry lines from a variety of jewellery artisans.

TOP FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER

GABOR JURINA

“I love Gabor Jurina,” says Beker of the Toronto-based photographer. Jurina has shot celebrities such as Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Toronto’s own Coco Rocha.

OUTSTANDING NAIL SALON

SPA NAIL

“Without any question, Spa Nail. I live there,” says Beker excitedly. “I think they’re fabulous.”

ADORED CHILDREN’S BOUTIQUE

ADVICE FROM A CATERPILLAR

“I’m just always charmed when I go in there,” says Beker of Advice from a Caterpillar. “They even mix some vintage things in, and I just love that store.”

FASHION POWER COUPLE

BEN & JESSICA MULRONEY

When thinking about a couple that elevates a fashion event, Beker chooses Ben and Jessica Mulroney. “She’s one of the nicest people, so sweet with a great sense of style,” says Beker.

CHOICE HAIR SALON

RAPUNZEL HAIR

“I’ve been going to the same little hair salon for a million years,” says Beker. “Rapunzel has been doing my hair since 1979.”
