When it comes to comfort, casualness and style, you can usually only pick two in any given item. But when the designers at Ovadia & Sons and Gap — along with the arbiters of manly style at GQ Magazine — put their heads together, you’re bound to break some rules.

Although we have officially entered fall, it’s still hard to completely give up on what’s left of warmer, sunnier days. It is a style trap set by the weather, filling the streets of Toronto with off-kilter combinations of winter boots and tank tops, socks and sandals, parkas and jean shorts. This time of year, the city is one big sartorial mess.

At the top of an unassuming staircase at a tiny Yorkville address, The Black Box Boutique opened its doors on Sept 8. Owner Lilla Balint has transformed a former office space into a sweet little jewel box of a store, selling — three guesses — jewellery. “I wanted people to walk in and have it be shiny and glittery,” Balint says.

If we learned anything from the Marc Jacobs fall runway show, it’s that hats are the key accessory of the season. Even if an oversized, cartoon-like creation made from fun fur is not your cup of tea, to deny a statement headpiece from your wardrobe is a serious faux pas. Instead, try something a little more understated — sleeker, and more chic — like this version by Tiger of Sweden from Shoppalu.

“When women enter my shop,” says Shellie Willms, “I want them to feel like royalty!” Three-week-old Pomp and Pageantry in Yorkville is something Willms has been dreaming of for quite some time. Matching a clutch of well-sourced brands with attentive service, Willms hopes to
return to the original meaning of ‘boutique’—and will offer you a cuppa tea while she’s at it.

When the girls behind Mumbai-based label NorBlack NorWhite headed back to their hometown for a week-long pop-up shop at Miracle Thieves in Toronto, I knew a piece from their collection would be a must-have addition to my wardrobe. How could you not support young people with such a passion for extraordinary textiles?

Though rumours have been circulating since 2009 that Toronto would be getting its own Monocle store, we finally have concrete evidence that the self-proclaimed “premium media brand,” is coming to a street corner near you. According to a recent tweet, Monocle will be launching its very first Toronto location, and we've learned it will open on October 18. The new office and retail store, as well as a recording studio facility for Monocle's online radio, is set to open at College and Shaw.

Cameron Wilson’s proper exposure to the fashion world began at age 17, when he moved to Milan. Working as a full-time model, Wilson became increasingly transfixed with being on the other side of the camera, taking to fashion photography like a moth to a flame. Fast-forward a few years, and Untitled & Co., Wilson’s month-old boutique, aims to recreate some of that photo-worthy flare for the downtown crowd.

For those who look for the little details in an item, you’ll most likely have an appreciation for fine packaging as well. These days it’s rare to come across a product packaged so intricately that the outside is just as special as what’s hidden inside.

September is always a strange month for dressing. Generally, it’s cool in the morning, hot during the day, and cold at night. This weird weather creates a struggle to come up with an outfit that caters to all the different temperatures we face in one day. September is also the month that immediately creates a divide between those who believe it is still summer, and those who believe it is officially fall.

Standing proud in the Distillery District’s main cobblestoned thoroughfare, Hoi Bo is the first stand-alone retail shop for designer Sarra Tang. Sometimes, a cross-continental road trip in the name of hard-to-get haberdashery is an adventure worth having. That goes double if we’re talking stuff by Alexander Olch, the acclaimed New York tie-maker who got his start hand-crafting neckwear at Harvard; it’s all but impossible to find outside Canada’s west coast or the States.

There’s never a better excuse to buy a new clutch than TIFF. After all, it’ll be the bag that’s clung to your arm, and won’t leave your side, for a solid 10 days straight. When else does a clutch get that much use, unless you’re a Kardashian sister?
