#51 Bymark

Bymark

It was #39 in 2012, #47 in 2013, #52 today. Why? ’Cause the lights are on but nobody’s home. It’s still on the list for two reasons: The room is still of breathtaking beauty, spare elegant wood and stone Canadiana. And the McEwan Group’s buying power and knowledge bring ingredients of the highest quality — the best seafood, and red meat fit for kings. As befits the diners at Bay Street’s fave after-work watering hole. But how come we can’t find any tarragon in the $27 lobster barnaise poutine? The cooking is rough around the edges — too much sugar in kimchee artichokes, soggy chickpea frites with the lamb. And service, previously so suave, has become less knowledgeable. One evening we ask two servers what flavour a foam is and neither knows. But the thousand dollar suits still love the $35 burger. Eight ounces of P.E.I. grass-fed beef with ultra-crisp onion rings and unimpeachable French brie makes those 80-hour work weeks feel worth it.
