Since switching chefs — from snazzy Charlotte Langley to more down-home Matty Cowan (ex Jazz and Simple bistros) – Catch has become both tastier and easier on the wallet. And more accessible – they sell steak and pasta now. They’re also cultivating late-evening bar trade (especially hot on their fab summer terrace) but the dinner hour remains highly civilized. We love the not-too-creamy New England chowder, and the deconstructed Bloody Caesar (yes!) crab salad with spicy Caesar (the drink, not the salad) dressing and oodles of fresh crab. They still do whole grilled fish impeccably cooked, but we favour grilled octopus (first steamed, then marinated, then grilled) with sweet/hot chorizo jam. And big fat golden scallops with puree of parsnip and bone marrow. As for gilding the lily, dip their zucchini frites in aïoli and damn the cholesterol.
