#44 One

One

Mark McEwan’s Yorkville fashionista it spot has not previously been a hotbed of gastronomy. But as the menu has toned down (less fancy buttery French stuff), the quality has gone up. They do super tender octopus in hot red sauce fragrant with coriander seedlings and sausage fragments. Cute little tuna tacos are soft corn tortillas with impeccable raw tuna and chili aïoli for cream and spice. Red pepper bread with upscale butter is like manna in heaven. But don’t try to eat cheap here. If it’s truffle season there’s truffle risotto… for $100. The wine list mostly goes for north of $100. The $30 burger is impeccable (and they ask how I want it done!) and $46 scallops, though a titch overcooked, are almost worth it. But One is more than food: Service is ultra smooth and the room is as glam as it gets — tall, elegant, and spacious. Summertime the terrace jumps with very pretty people.
