#35 Khao San Road

Khao San Road

Despite the departure of founding chef Nuit Regular, Khao San continues to be a) mobbed and b) delicious. Thanks to the no-reservations policy, lineups start nightly at 6. And the food is worth it. Okay, so the house-made chicken sausage in the fresh rolls lacks the subtlety of Nuit’s hand, but all else is still a Thai treasure. Deep-fried squash fingers with sweet/hot tamarind sauce could be lighter but remain fun food. Khao soi, the Chiang Mai signature soupy stew of juicy chicken in velvety coconut cream, with two kinds of noodle — boiled in the stew, and deep-fried crispy on top — is as good as Nuit’s ever was. As is the fab tamarind-spiked curry of potatoes and beef with toasted peanuts and tiny deep-fried shallot rings on top.
