There’s no law against a star chef having more than one restaurant. Chef Claudio Aprile has Origin North, and he opened (and closed) Origin Liberty. We like Origin King St. for its multiplicity of ethnicities: Creamy fresh mozzarella with treats like preserved lemon and fresh pesto … Truffled popcorn, rich and crunchy, the sexiest snack in town….Juicy black cod with toasted nori and stir-fried Chinese veg…. The signature dessert of freeze-dried raspberries atop dulce de leche cream with lemon cake. And we like Origin North for the massive wooden beams and all the glass. The best item on the North menu is scallop ceviche, small sweet raw scallops set off by coconut lime broth and frozen chili dressing – hot and cold at the same time – with crispy plantain chips on top. But without the maestro’s hand, (since he’s clearly often elsewhere) the focus at both is sometimes fuzzy: Bangkok beef can be too sweet and sometimes the welcome can be less so.
