#44 Nana

Nana

Thailand is one of my fave travel destinations because I, like most armies, march on my belly. Nowhere else in the world do I have such confidence — or joy — in cheap street food. Hence my pleasure at Nana, young sib of Khao San Road but casual and edgier. Nana mimics Thai street stalls, with the same cheesy blue plastic plates, red plastic stools, a cobblestone floor (!!)… and great food. Spice levels are not adjustable, so if you can’t take the heat get out of the kitchen. Tom yum soup is a spicy symphony of tomato, lemongrass and lime. Laab (built on either oyster mushrooms or fried chicken) is trad Thai street salad spiked with shallots, chilies, mint, palm sugar and toasted rice. But my heart belongs to khao soi, northern Thailand’s meal-in-a-bowl: Coconut chicken soup overflowing with bean sprouts, onions, fried chicken and egg noodles, topped with crispy fried noodles. Yum!
