Of crepes, cafes and custom designs

Plus, family restaurant marks 65 years, and more

Jenny To was tired of having to travel downtown every time she craved a crepe, which is why she recently opened Pastel, a new creperie and dessert house. To and her brother Johnny spent months perfecting the different savoury and sweet options, such as the frankfurter sausage crepe and the strawberry shortcake crepe (5417 Yonge St., 647-352-5588).

Fortunes Fine Jewellers is celebrating 25 years of creating custom pieces on Avenue Road. Owner and designer, Michael daCosta, started his career as a goldsmith. “Knowing the techniques ... allowed me to exercise my imagination and learn how to express jewellery on paper,” he says. Fortunes is able to do repairs and servicing as well (1901 Avenue Rd., 416-787-4545).

Owner Tomer Malca and his brother, Roy, have taken over at King Kosher Pizza, renaming it Pizza Cafe. Their recipe is an old one that has been handed down over the years, says Roy. On top of kosher pizzas, the brothers have introduced a fresh salad bar to the shop. Catering services are available for birthdays and other events (3774 Bathurst St., 416-633-5678).

Jack & Jones, a Denmark clothing company specializing in jeans, has just opened its first Toronto location at Fairview Mall. The store is best  known for Italian denim. “We’ve had people say they were travelling in Lebanon and saw a location there and that they’re so happy we’re here now,” says manager Ashley Bronsard (1800 Sheppard Ave. E., 416-756-4747).

Steve’s Restaurant has been serving up homestyle cooking in the neighbourhood for 65 years. The family-run business has remained so for three generations (3788 Bathurst St., 416-633-8812).
