New sushi spot rolls into neighbourhood

Plus, one-stop shop for pets and owners, 15 years of fine wines, and more

A Japanese restaurant called Wakame Sushi has opened in the neighbourhood. Owner Kevin Yan says popular menu items include the volcano, a dish containing crab, scallops and spicy sauce, as well as the cucumber salad roll with crab and avocado. On top of all-you-can-eat sushi options, takeout and delivery are also available (638 Sheppard Ave. W., 416-631-0505).

The Wine Butler is celebrating 15 years on Avenue Road. Owner Mark Whalen says that his selections come at a fraction of the cost, with a fraction of the preservatives, as those found at the liquor store. With more than 100 different varieties on hand at any time, Whalen’s shop produces more than 150,000 bottles every year (1732 Avenue Rd., 416-781-9463).

A new store designed to offer comfort products for both pet and owner has set up shop in the Sheppard Centre. Owners Susan Tolkin and Cindy Waldman say Pet’n’Master carries everything from back supports and foot spas to dog carriers and cat furniture. Pet food isn’t sold in store, but it can be ordered for home delivery (Sheppard Centre, 416-807-3846).

Mist Salon is new to North York. Right now, its focus is on everything to do with hair, including cuts, colour, perms and updos. But soon owner Farideh Kafaei plans to expand to provide spa services, opting for natural products and remedies. Kafaei says quality is important to her, so she’s equipped Mist with the best of everything (5315 Yonge St., 416-221-6478).

This month, Berani Jewellery Design will double its size. The Bayview Village store is knocking down a wall and taking over the neighbouring space, making way for a 600-square-foot Swarovksi Crystal boutique. The store will reopen in February (2901 Bayview Ave., 416-227-9200).
