North Yorker opens up world-class facility

Jonathon Power hopes to grow the sport with new training complex

Jonathon power, twice the top-ranked squash player in the world, is building a state-of-the-art training facility that is set to open in Downsview Park this September.

Power’s National Squash Academy has him returning to the former site of the military base he lived on as a teen, where his father established courts that went when the base did. Since he left the professional circuit, he has worked with his dad, running training camps in Canada and the United States.

Now with his own facility, he hopes to grow the sport here, in his hometown. Sharing the sport that has given him so many opportunities is important to him. “I’m trying to bring that to other kids and other people and just trying to get the level of Canadian squash back up there on the world stage,” Power said.

The academy will feature 10 squash courts, including the only permanent four-wall, glass show court in all of Canada and the only four-wall, glass doubles court in existence.

“It’s going to be such .... an incredible facility that will be open to everybody, but at the same time, it will be a centre of excellence,” said Power’s dad, John. “These young guys have great dreams.”
