End of the road in Thornhill

Our area streets are in desperate need of repairs

BEING A MUNICIPAL councillor gives me the opportunity to deal with the widest variety of community issues. Here are just two I am dealing with.

The quality of our roads is very important. Roads in disrepair look bad and increase wear on our vehicles. Equally important is that a deteriorating road is not efficient at one of its most important functions: preventing flooding. The Thornridge area roads have been deteriorating for many years. The area has also seen substantial flooding. Just a few weeks ago, a public meeting was held to consider what type of road should be installed when the city rebuilds area roads. Look for construction to begin in mid- summer.

While people in Vaughan welcome the two proposed subway extensions that are being planned, there are significant impacts that these super projects will have in our neighbourhoods.

The western expansion to the planned Vaughan Corporate Centre near Jane and Highway 7 has been approved and is moving forward. The Yonge Street extension from Finch to the Richmond Hill Centre may be approved by the province in the spring budget. Residents in the uplands area are very concerned about the impact of a 2000 vehicle parking lot that is planned for the hydro lands at Yonge and the 407. The concerns that have been raised cover a broad spectrum of issues from safety, traffic congestion, pollution, noise and drainage. These are all critical matters that need to be considered in the subway planning process.

Fortunately, when these issues first arose at a public meeting, the York Region Subway Planning team made commitments to begin working with community representatives to address each of the concerns.
