Richmond Hill’s rich history
I’m all geared up for Heritage Village Day!
Councillor Lynn Foster -
Richmond Hill
AS I WRITE this column, it is still cold and snowy outside, and I can’t wait for spring. There are some wonderful events happening soon, including the Mill Pond Splash on May 31, Heritage Village Day on June 21 and, of course, the very popular Concerts in the Park at Mill Pond Park every Thursday evening from July 9 until August 27.
This year we have a new initiative attached to Heritage Village Day and that is Doors Open Richmond Hill. This concept provides residents and visitors the opportunity to tour a variety of local heritage and cultural facilities free of charge.
We have selected a number of beautiful and interesting sites, including the Burr House, McConaghy Seniors Center, Richmond Hill Center for the Performing Arts, Amos Wright House and others with an interesting history and wonderful architectural story to tell about our community.
In addition we will be providing horse-drawn wagon rides through the downtown section of Ward 4 with a guide on board to provide colour commentary about different heritage homes on the route.
It will be a fun day to walk along Yonge Street and see all the vendors who will be attending, and to join us for a fascinating tour of some of our most interesting buildings. Come out and learn about the rich history of Richmond Hill through our built heritage.
Make sure you have got your date booked to join us June 21 for Heritage Village Day in Richmond Hill and for our first ever Doors Open Richmond Hill. Hope to see you there!
