It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s the GTA’s comic book warriors

The widespread success of Scott Pilgrim has reignited the city’s passion for comics. With the Comicon Fan Expo coming to town this month, we thought we’d egg on some local rivals: George Zotti from Silver Snail (a Queen West stalwart) and Peter Dixon from Paradise Comics (an uptown favourite). We’ll let you decide which shop is tops.

DOWNTOWN'S SILVER SNAIL VS. UPTOWN'S PARADISE COMICS

35 Years in business

The original owner had two passions: comic books and animals. He figured, if the comic thing didn’t work out, Silver Snail could become a pet store … The name game
Basically it’s a name of a place where everyone wants to be. Yes, everyone wants to be in paradise.
Green Lantern. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always been a big fan — and I even have a tattoo of the symbol! If I could be a superhero, I’d be…

I’ve always had an affection for Spider-Man — Peter Parker as Spider-Man. He’s always doing the right thing, but seems a little troubled.
Paradise’s specialty is comic books, so I would use the ability to turn paper into dust — totally wipe Peter out. If I had one superpower to destroy my rival
We actually send people to them when they’re asking for toys! But I think one of the things we could do to combat Silver Snail is build a much larger store than them.
Spider-Man #1, $12,000. Biggest sale
Spider-Man #1, $32,000.
Kevin Smith, Robin Williams, Harrison Ford. Bob Dylan bought, like, a $200 Looney Tunes Porky Pig issue. Celebrity sightings
Julia Roberts’ brother Eric Roberts has spent some good money on Spider-Mans here. And Gordon Lightfoot used to buy Pokémon cards for his grandson!
That they’re completists: if you’ve got Spider-Man comic books, you want every Spider-Man comic book, which is a giant undertaking! Most accurate comic fan stereotype?

I do get a few too many people wanting to know who would win in a fight — be it Batman versus Captain America or She-Hulk versus Wonder Woman.
