OIL AND WATER Written by Robert Chafe Directed by Jillian Keiley Composed by Andrew Craig Musical direction by Kellie Walsh April 18 – May 6, 2012 Early View performances: April 24 & 25
Big edgy theatre from the edge of a big country. Oil and Water is a theatrical retelling of the incredible true story of Lanier Phillips. Shipwrecked in 1942, Mr. Phillips was the only African-American survivor. He was saved and openly embraced by the “people of St. Lawrence” and his life was forever altered. This legendary story still resonates with relevance and power. A ten-person cast sings an a cappella score by Andrew Craig that blends the Newfoundland folk tradition with African-American gospel. From the company that brought Tempting Providence, After Image and Fear of Flight to Toronto audiences, this is the first official date of a national tour for the February 2011 hit. “… a story told with incredible skills and soaring gospel music…“ CBC Radio
“Remarkable… Chafe, who won the 2010 Governor General’s Award for drama, handles his material brilliantly in a script that shifts smoothly from the lyrical to the mundane to the sacred to the comic.” Drama.ca
“Script and storyline are touching and poignant… stylish and ingenious production.” The Telegram
