KAREN STINTZ Ward 16 Councillor
AS YOU ARE no doubt aware, the City of Toronto is undertaking significant boulevard and road construction work on Yonge Street between Eglinton Avenue and Lawrence Avenue.
The purpose of this work is to repair the surface areas after making critical improvements to underground utility and water main structures.
The project is expected to take six months and be completed by November 2009. Importantly, the current civic strike should have very minimal impact on the project and its timelines.
Significant efforts have been made to minimize disruption to residents and businesses. Police officers are on site to direct traffic; some work will be done on weekends or nights; water trucks will be used to minimize dust; and a parking spot assessment was conducted in advance to ensure sufficient parking availability.
Despite these efforts, vehicular and pedestrian access to commercial and residential properties will be intermittently disrupted during various phases of construction.
This will have an impact on the neighbourhood and particularly on our local businesses.
This type of construction is challenging at the best of times, but certainly more so during tough economic times. As such, I encourage you to continue your valuable patronage of the stores in this area. The extra effort you take to give these stores your business will greatly help in preserving the economic health of the area.
On behalf of the city and the local Business Improvement Area organization, I thank you for your patience. Be assured, after all of the work is complete, residents and businesses will have a safe and beautiful area worthy of its shopping destination status in the city of Toronto.
