Owner Wayne Fromm and daughter Sage recently opened the doors to Twisted Bagel in North York.

Previously home to What a Bagel and many years before that the popular Carousel — Toronto’s first drive-in restaurant — the shop boasts a menu offering soups, sandwiches, salads and breakfast options, in addition to bagels.

“We’re going to let the world know that Toronto makes the best twister bagel,” says Fromm, who is eager to put Toronto on the world bagel map alongside Montreal and New York. The location also offers children’s baking classes and birthdays, banquet hall rentals and cakes (3500 Bathurst St., 416-781-2243).

Periwinkle Flowers owners Jessica McEwen and Erin Paterson are once again running their annual Flowers for Food drive. For the month of December, the pair is collecting food donations for the Second Harvest food bank, offering all who donate a flower in return for their generosity. Beschle Chocolatier Suisse recently opened their only Canadian retail location in the Yorkdale Shopping Centre. Kushh, which touts itself as “Toronto’s first mid-town hemp culture store,” opened recently in North York. The store offers a selection of hemp and bamboo clothing, bags and accessories as well as original artwork, books, magazines and more. Kiva’s Bagel Bakery and Restaurant, a North York fixture for the past 30 years, recently sold their 30 millionth bagel. Despite technological advances, all Kiva’s bagels are still individually hand rolled and kettle boiled. “It’s what makes Kiva’s stand out from the rest,” says Kiva’s co-owner Ben Rafael, who runs the bakery with brothers Elan and Steve. “Our customers know the quality and care we take to make each bagel” (1027 Steeles Ave.W., 416-663-9933).
