DOM and DOMer

Some properties seem to sit on the market for months on end — for no rhyme or reason.

This Parr Place home wasn’t close enough to Sharon and Eugene Yermus’s kids, so they traded one ‘hill’ for another, moving from Thornhill to Forest Hill.

Some properties seem to sit on the market for months on end — for no rhyme or reason. The Yermus family got lucky. After their custom home sat for 100 days on the market (DOM), they found a buyer. Read on for their story, plus four more homes that have been for sale for more than half a year.

100-day journey

Eugene and Sharon Yermus built the ultimate    “entertaining” home    for their family in early 2005. Eugene, a custom builder, and Sharon, an interior designer, sat down with an architect and created a six- bedroom, 10-bathroom home in Thornhill. After two of their three kids moved out, the Yermuses decided to head south to Forest Hill.

“We built the [Forest Hill] house closer to where our kids now live,” explains Sharon. “I guess our kids just can’t get away from us!” The Yermuses originally listed their home at $4,495,000 but sold it for $3,775,000. “We probably listed it a little high,” says Sharon. “But we sold to a lovely young family, who also had two boys and one girl.” While 100 days on the market might seem like a long time to wait for a home to sell, it’s almost par for the course in today’s tough market.

Now Sharon and Eugene reside in another custom home, closer to their Toronto-based children, complete with a “two-storey walk-in closet with a spiral staircase,” no less.
