Essential Information

20 Adelaide Street West

The block bound by Adelaide, Bay, Queen & Yonge was owned by Jesse Ketchum. When the city approached him in 1837 to help build a road between Richmond and Adelaide, he donated the land, with the stipulation that alcohol never be sold on the new street. Thus Temperance Street was born. Our new restaurant is geographically south of Temperance Street and metaphorically very much “south” of the concept of not selling alcohol.
South of Temperance is the only free-standing licensed establishment in the financial district. We are a North American bistro, broad and egalitarian in scope & an independent enterprise in the world that is becoming increasingly more corporate & chain-driven. Our menu is accessible. The ingredients, proudly and whenever possible, are sustainable, local, organic and crafted by our very authentic & passionate South American chef. Our guests are from the neighbourhood, they work hard and play hard. We feel it is our job to offer a compelling playground for them to return to, time and time again.

South of Temperance is a great place to eat, drink & refresh. We are right for every occasion, every day of the week. The prices are “market”, the selection is satisfying & the vibe: breezy.
