MIKE FELDMAN Ward 10 Councillor
CHANGE IS COMING to Earl Bales Park, thanks to a very generous donation from a family who, like many of us, loves the park.
Goldie Feldman and her son David Green believe that investing in the community is an important part of strengthening our society. They are doing so in memory of Goldie’s parents and David’s grandparents. Philanthropic values and commitment of this kind will bring the city’s largest accessible water play and sensory garden to Earl Bales Park.
Nancy Oomen, my senior executive assistant, is working with David and city staff to make the final project a safe and interesting place where kids can play. To come up with a unique design, we have asked children from local schools to give us their ideas on what should be part of the project. After all, who better to provide feedback than the individuals who will use it?
We have received wonderful drawings that will inform the opinions of professionals who work with special-needs kids and help the designers come up with a plan for this project.
We are grateful to Goldie for her contribution, which will allow children who have special needs to experience the outdoors and enjoy water and sensory features alongside able-bodied children.
Special-needs kids now will be included, not excluded. Kids with physical challenges will learn and play because our design will incorporate plants with texture and smell. Water features will be accessible to wheelchairs.
We are looking forward to experiencing the joy and smiles of the kids as they explore the sensory garden and have fun in the water play area. Goldie’s parents would be proud knowing the pleasure that will be brought to so many in their memory.
Look for the water play to be ready in time for the 2010 summer season.
