Keeping an eye on road racers

Fight the urge to speed this summer season

NOW THAT SUMMER is officially here, it seems that some motorists consider the good weather a license to speed and practise other forms of aggressive driving.

When driving, you may notice that there are signs with a big eye overlooking the road called “Road Watch signs.” As you may know, the Road Watch program aims to reduce dangerous driving and promote road safety by encouraging residents to report aggressive driving in a confidential manner and educating motorists to obey the rules of the road. The York Regional Police fully supports the program and has recently launched a regional program.

In recognition of the hard work of dedicated members of the Road Watch committee and their commitment to community safety, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation presented them with the 2008 Road Safety Achievement Award in the “volunteer” category.

If you have attended community events such as the Santa Claus parade, Winter Carnival, Heritage Village Day, or Canada Day celebrations, you would have seen the Road Watch eye booths. As the founding treasurer of Richmond Hill’s Road Watch program and Council liaison of the committee, I invite you to applaud our volunteers who make a difference in road safety.

Speaking of difference, the town's first pole-mounted electronic radar speed boards on High Tech Road scored big in significantly improving the compliance rate of drivers. The speed limit compliance to 50 km/hr has increased from about 12 per cent before installation to an impressive 70 per cent. With drivers’ diligence and ongoing police support, such a success story in reducing speeding would make a road safety first around town.
