Moore Avenue to get redesign

New landscaping features will also slow drivers

CAN THE DESIGN of a road affect traffic speeds?

Research by traffic engineers says yes. Based on that research, the part of Moore Avenue that passes across the northern boundary of Bennington Heights is about to get a major overhaul before the end of 2009.

Residents of Bennington Heights, Leaside and North Toronto will recognize Moore Avenue as a wide thoroughfare resembling a country highway connecting Moore Park to the southern end of Bayview Avenue.

Those who live near the road have long been subjected to traffic speeds well in excess of the posted 40 km/h limit and the noise and safety issues that come with such speeds. Many drivers have been irritated by speed traps that generate speeding tickets for vehicles caught travelling at those high speeds, oblivious to the posted speed limit.

For several months, I have been working with local residents and transit staff to settle on a new design for Moore Avenue, to moderate speeds without interfering with the flow of traffic at the designated speed. Key to the design is a range of visual cues that will encourage drivers to adopt a natural driving speed in line with the posted speed limit.

The road will have a centre median, trees and more clearly defined limits. The effect will be achieved strictly by the psychological impact of the visual features. No humps, stop signs or other obstructions.

The new design will also be more beautiful. With the support of local residents, I have arranged for city staff to include landscaping along the length of the new road, with special features at each end intended to create a gateway to the community.

Work will begin this fall, following construction of a new water supply line this summer.
