St. Clair construction continues

In the mean time, check out the Salsa on St. Clair fest

AS IT HAS been for the past four years, a highlight of my summer in 2009 will be the Salsa on St. Clair festival.

Salsa on St. Clair celebrates the rich culture of St. Clair West. This year, it will take place on July 11, from noon to 11 p.m., and July 12 from noon to 8 p.m. The free street festival offers a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to experience the unique flavour of our community.

The festival features live music and delicious offerings from our local restaurants. Salsa also includes a street market, a twoday sidewalk sale, contests and children’s activities.

For the past five years, I have helped organize this event with TLN Television and the Hillcrest Village BIA. We launched the festival before the start of the St. Clair streetcar construction as a way to support local businesses.

As the festival has grown, I have worked closely with businesses to support them through the difficult times of construction and, now, a global recession.

Construction work in the area between Christie Street and Winona Drive, where the festival will be held, will come to a halt to accommodate the festival, and I’m pleased that this will be the last one affected by construction! By the time 2010 rolls around, we will be celebrating the revitalization of St. Clair’s streetscape and transit as well as its culture.

Construction on St. Clair continues to progress well across the entire project area, from Vaughan Road to Westmount Avenue. I am working closely with project managers and TTC staff to resolve outstanding design issues for shelters, in preparation for having these installed when streetcars roll from Yonge Street to Lansdowne Avenue this fall.
