The couple and son Will today
IT WAS LOVE at first sight for Morey Chaplick when he spotted his future wife, Jennifer, from across the room. She gave him her phone number, and soon wedding bells were on the horizon. And now, with two children and a successful business under their belts, this Village twosome say they are happier than ever. Morey shares their story:
“It was a fateful night that found me picking up my brother-in-law at David’s shoes. “Jennifer was a bookkeeper at the store and was perched behind the counter when I first spotted her.
“She was, and still is, the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen. And I was smitten from the moment I saw her. “I introduced myself and asked her if she would let me have her phone number, to which, luckily, she said yes.”
“I called her right away, and we made plans to go out the following Saturday. “That was over 25 years ago. On our first date, we went to the Parrot restaurant on Queen Street West.
“After dinner we went for drinks and some jazz music at the Montreal Bistro (which unfortunately closed last year). The conversation flowed easily, and we ended up staying until they were closing. From that first night, I knew in my heart that I would marry her.”
“From that first date onward, we continued to see each other, and our relationship grew stronger and stronger. “We moved in together and were married four years later. Every day is a memorable one with Jennifer.”
“We were married on Sept. 14, 1988, at City Hall in Toronto. “We had our two best friends in attendance. “Afterwards, we took a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce to Woodbine Racetrack and had lunch on the finish line. “We had an amazing day at the races and then headed to Chiaro’s in the King Edward Hotel for dinner.
“We booked the honeymoon suite, and the next day, I was back at the office. My wife is still waiting for that honeymoon trip.”
“We have lived in Rosedale for over 20 years, and we now have two amazing children: Brad, who is in his 20s, and Will who is five.”
Their lives and interests today “I am president of Canadian Scooter Corporation (importers and distributors of Piaggio, Aprilia and Vespa scooters and Aprilia and Moto Guzzi motorcycles in Canada) and CSC Apparel (distributors of Fred Perry in Canada). “Our lives are extremely busy, with raising our children and our business ventures.
“We try to embrace a ‘less is more’ outlook. Our lives are what I like to refer to as hectic bliss. Running after a five-year-old keeps you young. We also share a number of hobbies and causes. We share a love of running and have completed a number of races together. As well, we are both into alternative rock ’n’ roll and snowboarding. And we share a passion for animal and environmental rights.”
Morey says he believes the key to a good relationship is mutual respect and support and tries to exercise that every day in his marriage. “The secret to our success as a couple is that we try to listen to each other,” he says. “It’s not how you hear each other but rather how you understand and support each other.”
Sage advice “Husbands, the best advice I can give you is that whatever your wife says goes! “Just be sweet to each other and the rest will work itself out.”
