Arnie and Heidi Gruenspan today
For Heidi and Arnie Gruenspan, all it took was one amazing date to turn their friendship into love. Soon an engagement followed, with Arnie hiding the proposal in a restaurant fortune cookie. And now, after 23 years of marriage, successful careers and three sons, the couple say that they are perhaps even happier together than ever before.
Heidi shares their story.
How they met:
My husband Arnie and I met in 1985, and were just friends at first. But as luck would have it, our friendship soon grew into a relationship. I was thoroughly surprised when Arnie turned the tables and let me know he was “interested.”
Their first date:
Soon after Arnie’s confession, we went on our first date to a local restaurant. The date
convinced me that there could be more between us than just friendship.
The proposal:
Eight months after becoming an official couple, we got engaged. Arnie proposed to me in a fortune cookie on June 7, 1986, at Lichee Gardens restaurant. It was very romantic and a total surprise.
The wedding:
We were married 13 months later at Beth Emeth Synagogue on July 5, 1987. Our wedding was large and beautiful. We even had a plane flying a banner saying ‘Congratulations Heidi and Arnie!’ But though the day was perfect, it almost didn’t happen at all! Before the wedding, I had to have my wisdom teeth removed and got an infection that had to be lanced the week prior. It looked like I had a golf ball in my neck!
The honeymoon:
Our honeymoon was a cruise to Europe on kind of a pathetic-looking ship that ended up sinking three years later.
Their lives today:
We have three sons: Ryan, who is 18; Grant, who is 16; and Jordan who is 13. They are terrific kids, and though our eldest is away this year in university, we try to visit him as often as possible. Arnie now owns a dry cleaners in Toronto and also has a successful pickup and delivery dry cleaning business, the Kleaning King, which keeps him pretty busy. I have my own business, Heidi Gruenspan Party Planning, as a wedding, bar and bat mitzvah planner, and have been doing it for 16 years. I love it. It keeps me away a lot on weekends, but we are used to it and work around the hours.
Secret to success:
The secret to our relationship is laughter. We are truly good friends, and we love to spend as much time together as we can. We try to include our boys in everything we do and have a great time together even if it is just at home.
