Gridiron Gems

Football reads for the fall

THE FOOTBALL BOOK

Sports Illustrated

Football is the biggest thing going on television, as armchair quarterbacks across the country settle in for another NFL season. To keep up the latest and greatest the game has to offer, Sports Illustrated has updated its legendary tome: Sports Illustrated: The Football Book ($34.95), an essential item for any serious fan of the game. And, it makes a great little nachos stand on game day.

GAME CHANGERS

By Marv Levy and Jeff Miller

As Toronto’s pseudo home team, boning up on everything Buffalo Bills is a worthwhile halftime pursuit. In this new book, ex-coach Marv Levy runs down some of the defining moments in the team’s storied history, which included four consecutive trips to the NFL’s Super Bowl, coming up short in each and every one. Now that is consistency.

THE CATCH

By Joe Montana and Gary Myers

Those of a certain vintage remember The Catch — one of the most famous plays in the history of the league, between two of its biggest rivalries — like it was yesterday. Expertly dissected by acclaimed gridiron scribe Gary Myers, the book ($32) looks at the larger ramifications on the league, the two teams and the sports world in startling detail and with astute insight.
