A Temple Sinai Program – Annual Film Festival We are pleased to welcome Adam Nayman, film critic and writer, as our guest speaker for the weekend. Friday Evening: Einstein in the Holy Land (Israel 2015, 55 minutes, Hebrew) In February 1932 when Albert Einstein arrived in Palestine for a 12-day visit, he kept a journal, never intended for publication. Based on his diary, this documentary traces his journey to the Holy Land, highlighting his devotion to the Jewish state and his involvement in the establishment of Hebrew University. Saturday Evening: Children of Chance (France 2015, 90 minutes, French) Diagnosed with tuberculosis, Maurice Gutman is sheltered in a children’s hospital ward. As the war intensifies, the chief physician and senior nurse resort to drastic measures to keep Maurice and the other Jewish patients safe. Based on a true story, this tender coming of age drama is a testament to the resilience and bravery of youth. Sunday Matinee: 1945 (Hungary 2016, 91 minutes, Hungarian, Russian) Two Orthodox Jews disembark from a train setting a small Hungarian town into a panic. Their presence elicits a spate of rumours. This understated film quietly builds and ultimately packs an unexpected punch. Lunch: Film Festival Participants Sunday Evening: Harmonia (Israel 2016, 98 Minutes, Hebrew, Arabic) This award-winning and musically enchanting drama retells the foundational Biblical story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar in modern-day Jerusalem through the Jerusalem Philharmonic Orchestra. As the family is pulled apart, the hope for reunification is through the music they share. Cost: Temple Members: $110; Non-members: $135.
