March 16 – April 2, 2017 Reception: Thursday March 16th 6-9pm Megan Ellen MacDonald’s oil paintings have one foot in the 18th century and the other in the 21st. MacDonald appropriates romantic and baroque themes to firmly ground her work in the context of lavish genre painting, setting the stage for her colourful depictions of mass market disposable decoration and kitsch subject matter. Her work playfully questions the very nature of representational painting in the past and present - the impossible task of portraying reality when so much of what we consider as realism is often confused with the unreal. MacDonald’s most recent body of work, Curio, removes her subject matter from the grandiose landscapes they usually inhabit, and presents them in the more intimate context of still life. Fascinated by the innately useless nature of decorative objects - specifically those relating to domesticity and femininity, MacDonald takes subjects like knock-off fabergé eggs and mass produced decorative teacups and situates them as the objets de vertu of her still life paintings. Surrounded by fleshy fruits and lavish fabrics, a tarnished sugar bowl becomes a cauldron spilling pink smoke, and a cheap unicorn figurine becomes an elegant statue, all doused in a colourful haze of fantasy. By mirroring the visual opulence of her predecessors, MacDonald’s paintings give these decorative objects the illusion of grandeur and importance, and create a visual narrative all their own. Megan Ellen MacDonald is an artist living and working in Toronto, ON. MacDonald received her BFA from OCADU in 2013 and has exhibited work in Toronto and Montreal.
