The rarely-performed “a capella” St. John Passion by Heinrich Schütz is a highlight of the Festival finale. CANTATAS AND A PASSION, Directed by John Abberger, it. features seven instrumentalists and nine vocalists, including Ellen McAteer, Simon Honeyman, Nils Brown and Joel Alison, this program combines Schütz’s passion with two of Bach’s early cantatas. When Bach composed his now iconic passions, he drew on a rich tradition of passion music that had flourished in Germany for nearly a century. Heinrich Schütz’s earlier creations rank amongst the most beautiful from this history, and even today we can easily appreciate how his powerful music influenced Bach three generations later. Schütz is highly regarded as the most important German composer before J.S. Bach. His passions represent the culmination of his musical style, and continued to influence composers after Bach, including Johannes Brahms and Anton Webern.
