#94 Soos

Malaysian food at friendly prices, in a sweet cozy Ossington bistro. Soos is a family biz (ex MataHari on Baldwin St.). Their miniature chicken tacos are charming, scented with lemongrass. Satays are super tender and nicely partnered with thick chili-kissed peanut sauce. Mango slaw is Malaysia’s kissin’ cousin of Thai mango salad: Green mango with toasted peanuts, sesame, carrot and sweet pepper, fried shallots and enough chili for big bite. Laksa — Malaysia’s national dish — is curried soup/stew with shrimp, chicken and tofu, a hint of coconut milk and enough galangal, lemongrass and chili for excitement. Dessert is a must-have, Malaysian crème caramel: They flavour cream cheese with coconut, sweeten with gula mekala (Malaysian for palm sugar) and bake it in little ramekins, for a silken flavour wallop.
