#40 Vita Sociale

Vita Sociale

Downtown has come uptown. Only it’s cheaper at Sociale because when owner Armando Mano abandoned Centro in the spring he got smart. The tall room remains grand, but has gone casual, and it’s now a pizza ‘n’ pasta parlour with impeccable taste. Chef makes his own mozzarella (soft, sweet/salty, dangerously delicious) and pairs it with fab heirloom tomatoes and eentsy sweet/sour balls of balsamic (also house-made, some crazy alchemy involving agar gelling agent). Thin-crusty pizza comes with trad toppings but the brisket one gets my love: Veal brisket, brined, cooked sous-vide and smoked. For dessert there’s a dangerously rich white chocolate budino. This is fun food — for grownups.
