#66 Chantecler

Jonathan Poon’s original resto has a sweet cosy retro feel thinks to the open kitchen’s 1950s electric stove, the bistro tile and plain-spoken ambiance. Not so the food, which is creative fusion Orientalia, full speed ahead and damn the fat quotient. Spicy popcorn shrimp are sweet shrimp in big fat super-crunchy batter with more crunch from their embedded chile-kissed popcorn. Love the fish wrap — ungreasy tempura haddock with Japanese tartare sauce in lettuce leaf wrap. Kale salad is a flavourfest with Chinese-sauced oyster mushrooms, apple sticks, crisp shredded nori and slightly sweet sesame dressing. The lettuce meal (a Poon classic) is romaine leaves to wrap beef cheek and pork shoulder, both long-cooked, superbly tender and vaguely Chinese tasting. Go-withs in the leaf are lovely house-pickled veg and kim chee with Sriracha and kewpie mayo. And they take reservations!
