#33 L’Unità

L’Unità feels very New York — always crowded, tables too close together, dark and noisy, with harried servers… and great Italiana. Big flavours here! They have cleverly downscaled, focusing the menu on pizza and pasta, both done with uncommon deftness. The pizza crusts are superbly crisp, and nothing in town beats their exotic multi-mushroom pizza with fior di latte — for deep rich flavor and sexy texture. Chef stuffs delicate agnolotti with roasted parsnip puree and decorates the pasta with sweet smoked walnuts and great flurries of grated padano in brown butter. Her gnocchi are like feathers sitting pretty on soft braised oxtail. Even simple things like house-made noodles with lamb Bolognese have astonishing depth of flavor and great bite. The only sad news for ’15 is that the formerly supernal cannoli have gone tough and hard — impregnable to the fork.
