Why do Forest Hill gourmands fill Mama Rosa’s resto every night? They can afford to go elsewhere but they love the robust southern Italiana. Consistency is a big deal. It’s always good there. An Italian grandmother is worth her weight in gold, gastronomically. Those of us not lucky enough to have one go to 7 Numbers where Mama Rosa cooks six nights a week in the open kitchen at the front. And greets you. And offers to clean the stain off your shirt. Her southern Italian cooking is bright and strong, loaded with flavour. Mama Rosa’s meatballs are big, tender and bathed in her dazzling trademark tomato sauce. Her linguini with rapini come in great garlicky tomato sauce. Orecchiette are splendid with cured ricotta. She cooks both sardines and calamari perfectly. Walk in the door and get “Ciao bella,” and a kiss. What could be better?
