#40 A3 Napoli

A3 Napoli

Toronto becs fins gotta know that when you put Rocco Agostino (Pizzeria Libretto) in charge with Nick auf der Mauer (Porchetta & Co) collaborating, sparks will fly. Yummy sparks. A3, named for an unfinished highway into Naples, is casual southern Italiana personified, a downmarket snack bar with a big fat hot pizza oven turning out glorious pies. My fave is white pizza with mushrooms and mozzarella, bchamel, caramelized onions, garlic and thyme. They only do six pizzas and a credible kale Caesar, keepin’ it simple. Also great is maialino with tomato, mozzarella, spicy pork sausage, pepperoni and crunchy fried ciccioli (pressed cakes of fatty pork, divine). They also fry pizza and other assorted goodies. Best is fritto misto, crisp-fried zucchini, mozzarella, cheesy rice balls, shrimp, squid and cod. For dipping in three sauces —aïoli, jumped-up salsa verde with mint, and marinara. Add white subway tiles, red bricks and high-top tables, mix with the pork king and the pizza king, and delight.
