#5 Khao San Road

Khao San Road

Restaurants in downtown Toronto come and go but KSR is six years in and only on its 2nd chef. Food is crispy and creamy, sweet and sour, salty and spicy. Khao soi, their signature curry stew of tender chicken in coconut cream, has two kinds of egg noodle — boiled in the stew, and deep-fried on top. Deep-fried squash fingers are a tad greasy but deliciously offset with tangy tamarind sauce. All of the curries are decent, but standout is the Massaman which gets its unique flavour from tamarind and peanuts. Other notables are Pad gra prao — minced meat zinged with holy basil and lime leaves, topped with crispy fried egg, and crispy rice salad — gingery, herbal, with just the right amount of spice. They don’t take reservations so expect to stand in line, but the food is worth it.
