#45 The County General

The County General

The County has been riding high on a sea of whiskey pours, bourbon-based county cocktails, pork —and the high standards of owner Carlo Catallo, who has taken The County towards expansion, with spin-offs opening. Has this cost the cool southern diner some taste buds? Methinks. The formerly fab lightly smoked pork belly Chinese style on cute little steamed buns is good but has lost some garnish pizzazz. Ditto the fried chicken — still crispy but not as erotically so as in yesteryear. We love the slightly smoky guajillo and ancho chile-braised long ribs. But the competition in meat-mad Hogtown is so stiff. The farmhouse rustic dcor is still great, with a wonderful huge map of Toronto circa 1876. They’ve expanded from their bourbon obsession to include great rum pours; the cooking these days? Strictly mid pack.
